IPU’s Approach

A Model for Agile Collaboration

in brief

IPU - R&D’s Strongest Ally

Client

Tadano, a global leader in mobile crane manufacturing, set out to innovate its All Terrain Crane systems. Their German R&D team sought a partner who could bridge practical engineering with strategic technology development, someone agile, hands-on, and able to work seamlessly across mechanics, electronics, and software. That’s where IPU came in. The project focused on the systematic identification and qualification of candidate technologies, validated through simulations and experimental proofofconcept testing. While the specific application remains confidential, we can share our collaborative approach with Tadano.

Delivering Results, Building Confidence

Throughout the collaboration, Tadano and IPU worked side by side, evaluating a wide range of technologies, rapidly iterating on concepts, and refining the solution space. The outcome: two robust concepts, ready for further detailing, testing, and proof of concept. These early-phase solutions are designed for seamless integration with Tadano’s crane platform, tying together mechanics, data, and system logic.

IPU’s Approach

IPU’s Approach: Partnership in Practice

IPU’s ambition is to be R&D’s strongest ally. For Tadano, we assembled a multidisciplinary team with expertise in FEM simulation, sensor integration, and product development. Working closely with Tadano’s own engineers, we established a development process focused on value, feasibility, and tangible progress.

  1. Kickoff Workshop:  We began with a two-day workshop to align on project scope, understand product usage, and define the key challenges. Getting hands-on experience with the product and manufacturing process was a priority, ensuring practical insights from the very start.
  2. Concept Phase:  Starting with a broad technology search and brainstorming, we narrowed the field down to a shortlist of promising ideas. Technology candidates were qualified according to a prioritised list of criteria and risk assessments, based on literature search, technology analyses, and simulations. Through three design sprints, we matured each concept, continuously aligning with Tadano to ensure the direction remained relevant.
  3. ProofofConcept Phase: Two technologies were selected for further maturation and proofofconcept validation. Initial testing was conducted at IPU’s facilities to establish baseline performance and inform the subsequent test strategy. Based on these results, a structured design of experiments was defined and executed at Tadano’s site, incorporating an AllTerrain Crane. The tests were carried out in close collaboration between Tadano’s test engineers, specialists from key component suppliers, and IPU. Critical operating scenarios were systematically evaluated, and insights were captured to support further development, including clear recommendations for additional testing of more mature design iterations.

Frequent design sprints and close cooperation ensured Tadano’s expertise was embedded throughout, enabling efficient decision-making and rapid progress. The partnership was defined by transparency, shared ownership, and a constant focus on business value.

Looking Ahead

With two qualified concepts delivered in a short timeframe, Tadano is well-positioned for the next phase of validation and scaling. The collaboration continues, with both teams exploring new opportunities and building on a strong technical foundation.

Why IPU?

Tadano values pragmatism and forward momentum - qualities that define IPU’s approach. As R&D’s strongest ally, IPU offers more than just consultancy; we act as a hands-on partner, committed to long-term collaboration and real-world results.
